Meet the coaches

Meet Coach Alan

When he isn't busy running his award-winning custom picture framing business—where he has taken home numerous regional and international titles—you can find him coaching the next generation of athletes. Alan is a USA Triathlon (USAT) Level 1 Certified Coach who specializes in draft-legal racing for youth and juniors. He is also the proud co-founder and head coach of TriProject right here in Tempe, Arizona.

Alan’s love for adventure started early. Born in Washington, D.C., he grew up traveling the world as part of a Foreign Service family. It was during his time living in Barcelona that he first discovered his love for running, which quickly snowballed into a lifelong passion for all kinds of outdoor sports—from volleyball and track to whitewater kayaking and rock climbing.

However, everything changed when he moved to Durango, Colorado. The moment he discovered mountain biking and triathlon racing, he knew he had found his true calling. He was hooked for life! Today, Coach Alan brings that same unstoppable energy to the community, focusing his coaching expertise on supporting everyone and everything east of Central Avenue.

Meet Coach Amy

Amy Hanley is a physical education teacher, triathlon coach, doctoral student in education, military spouse, and lifelong sports enthusiast. A woman of many hats, Amy was born and raised in North Phoenix, where she was an avid swimmer before discovering distance running during her freshman year of college. She began training for half and full marathons, which eventually led her to join the ASU Collegiate Triathlon Club, a student-led organization where she fell in love with triathlon.

In her first Ironman, Amy placed first in her age group and qualified for the Ironman World Championship in Kona. One of her favorite races was IRONMAN 70.3 Muskoka, where her grandparents live and could watch her compete. For Amy, the best part of triathlon is that it is not about being the best at just one thing, but about becoming well-rounded, resilient, and willing to grow. She believes that the lesson carries far beyond sport and into everyday life.

Amy’s recent endeavors include serving as an assistant coach for a youth triathlon team in Oahu, Hawaii, joining ASU ROTC, continuing her doctoral studies, and getting back into cycling. Whether she is coaching athletes or teaching students in the classroom, Amy’s message remains the same: “If you can dream it, you can achieve it.” So start dreaming, and start achieving.  Coach Amy heads up Triproject West
